"Great Ife is not for thuggery. Great Ife is not for violence. Great Ife is for peace, justice, and all." With these powerful closing words, the Great Ife Students’ Union Electoral Commission and the Election Petitions Committee affirmed their commitment to a peaceful, democratic campus community in a statement released on Wednesday, 18th June 2025, condemning the recent violent attack on Hon. Fatoyinbo Azeez, Chairman of the Union’s Transport Management Committee and other students.
The electoral petition committee assured the student body that they stand firmly with the victims and will not relent until justice is served through proper Union procedures and the university’s regulatory framework. The releases stressed that the Union must remain a citadel of progress, unity, and intellectual engagement, free from violence and intimidation.
The electoral petition committee emphasised that such acts of brutality have no place within the Great Ife Students’ Union and stand in stark contrast to the Union’s long-standing values of peace, intellectualism, and principled activism.
The Commission, in their statement, noted that those involved in perpetrating the violent act had been identified and that a thorough investigation had commenced. They also stated that they would ensure the perpetrators are dealt with decisively and that all punishments given to them will be within the full ambit of Union laws and the university's regulations.
The electoral petitions committee stated that the Students' Union remains committed to fair representation of all faculties and to a sportsmanlike approach to politics. It emphasised that its strength does not lie in coercion or violence but rather in dialogue and peaceful democratic engagement.
In a call for calm, the Committee urged all aggrieved parties to reject violence and pursue peaceful dialogue and due process, emphasising that the strength of the Union lies in unity, not coercion or bloodshed.
