The MDCAN Strike Must End Now - Great Ife Students' Union

By Deborah Adeyemi
The Great Ife Students' Union, in a release on Sunday, March 23, has demanded an end to the strike led by the Medical and Dental Consultants Association of Nigeria (MDCAN) as the strike action  has been affecting medical and dental students. For over two months, the education and academic progress of the Medical and Dental Students have been put on hold because of the unresolved conflicts over the Consolidated Medical Salary Scale (CONMESS) and university governance policies.

In the press release, it was disclosed that written letters, consultations, and pleas for dialogue have been tendered to the university administration and the federal government, but all efforts to set things right have proved abortive. "Over 90 days without clinical training is not just a delay; it is a theft of time," is an extract from the press release that reveals the heartfelt cry and the significant damage that the strike must have caused to the affected students.

The students' union demands that all parties, which consist of the OAU administration, the federal government, and MDCAN itself, settle their conflict immediately and amicably. The Union has urged that these bodies to resume negotiations and "get us back to our classrooms and wards... we want to serve our nation as doctors and dentists."
