Former Great Ife Lord Chancellor Bags Award in Law School

By David Ogunlade

In what seems to be a turn around, Abiodun Samuel Adesanya, former Lord Chancellor of the Great Ife Students' Union bagged an Award of Meritorious Service at the Nigerian Law School.

Popularly called Lincoln, Abiodun served as the Chairman of the Judicial Council (Lord Chancellor) of the apex body of over 30,000 students at Obafemi Awolowo University from November 2023 to May 2024. He had earlier served a 3-term tenure as a parliamentarian on the Law Students' Representative Council, Faculty of Law, before his elevation to the Bench.

His six month reign was marked with strong adherence to the principle of judicial independence, equity, fairness and justice. He would rather run his tenure with zero kobo than to dabble into financial mess, upholding financial transparency and accountability at the Bench.
He presided over controversial cases that shook and shaped the political terrain of the university community. Abiodun's vehement opposition to injustice was greeted with diverse political gimmicks to the point of being unjustifiably forced out from office by the then parliament as he and 3 other Justices were labelled with an unknown offence called "Judicial Perjury". It was on record that the then Students' Representative Council neither issued the judicial officers any written petition nor was there any invitation for fair hearing (if at all there was an allegation/offence).

Undaunted by the experience at Great Ife, Abiodun presented himself for service at the Nigerian Law School when he contested and won as the Secretary-General of the Students' Representative Council, Augustine Nnamani Campus, Enugu.

He served with full dedication and devotion while representing the students competently. Under his office and with the support of the Executive Council, he left a legacy of establishing and organizing the annual Battle of Advocates (a Moot and Mock Competition in honor of the Director of Administration) at the Enugu Campus.
On the 3rd of February 2025, during SRC Week, he received the Award of Meritorious Service. He would later be acknowledged by the Council of Legal Education with a Letter of Commendation and a Certificate of Recognition.
