Students Raise Concerns Over Unregulated Commodity Prices on Campus; Welfare Director Explains Delays

By Deborah Adeyemi
The unregulated prices of goods on campus are posing a problem for students. Most vendors place whatever price tags they wish on products.

In a conversation with Lolu, he said, "The prices of goods are very high on campus. The vendors' mentality is that students are very rich, which is not true." He stated further that, "Since they know we have no choice but to buy, they will increase the price much more than the actual amount."

In a conversation with another student, she said, "I bought pepper for ₦200, and I counted it to be 6 pieces of pepper." She stated further, "I think the Students' Union should have a meeting with the market vendors."

A student who chose to remain anonymous also expressed her opinion, stating that "pepper and all other foodstuffs, including cooked food, are very expensive on campus, and I think it is being done intentionally. It is on the high side, and since they know we are left with no choice but to buy it, they continue this wicked act."

During the first Students' Representative Council (SRC) sitting for the session held on Saturday, November 16, the Welfare Director, Timileyin Busari, explained that a regulated price list ought to have been released, but the delay was due to most butteries on campus not yet being open. He mentioned then that the butteries were given an ultimatum to open unfailingly the following week, after which he would collect prices and conduct a market comparison before releasing the price list. The price list was not released due to various reasons.

A regulated list will be available after the new year resumption - Welfare Director
In a conversation with the Timileyin Busari, the Welfare Director of the Students' Union, he explained that "we are supposed to have a general meeting with the vendors this week but we find it almost difficult to come up with a general regulatory list due to the constant increase in some of the items on our list."

He further explained that a list was curated last week but information was gotten this week that the prices of some items will increase before and during the festive period.

The Welfare Director said, "we are going to suspend our meeting till after the new year resumption. Coming up with a regulated list is not something that should be rushed into. The perfect time is till after resumption."
