Great Ife Students' Union Demands Government's Implementation of Proper Safety Measures Following Esi Rita's Death

The Great Ife Student Union released a formal statement on Friday, August 23, addressing the Federal Government and the Osun state government on the implementation critical safety measures on its federal roads. This statement came in the wake of the fatal road accident that occurred on Thursday, August 22, 2024, claiming the life of Esu Rita 
Ema, a final student of Foreign Languages Department. 

Rita, who was on her way to submit her final year project, was hit while attempting to cross the Ife-Ibadan road at the campus gate. According to eye witnesses, the driver, one Lasisi Sodiq Segun, drove on high speed, killing the student while she stood by the roadside. This incident sparked an uproar within the campus community as road safety issues were highlighted.  

The Students' Union, hence, released her demands and call for an “immediate and decisive action” to prevent such tragic reoccurrence and the protect the lives of her students. The press release announced by the Great Ife Students' Union PRO, Aka Daniel, proposes the establishment of a designated garage for Lagos/Ibadan buses “reducing congestion and ensuring clear visibility at the highway intersections”. It also includes the advocacy for the construction of functioning pedestrian bridges outside the campus to provide a safe crossing point for students as well as pedestrians. It stresses the unreliability of the current one outside the campus, stating doubts on its integrity.


The press release calls for a clear and strict enforcement of traffic regulations around the campus to curb reckless driving and ensure compliance with traffic rules. Further addressing the Federal government, it emphasizes the imposition of speed limits and the installation of speed bumps on federal roads and highways around the campus to slow down vehicles and minimize accidents. 

The release also urges the school management to take proactive measures to ensure a lasting solution by constructing speed bumps at strategic locations both within and outside the campus and installing traffic signs and rules to guide drivers and pedestrians. The university management released a statement on Thursday, August 22, with details of the incident, expressing despair and condolences to the family of the deceased.

The release concluded with an urgent appeal to government bodies and the school authorities to act swiftly and decisively, emphasizing the safety of students as top priority.

Gas Explodes At Moremi Hostel

It was a normal Saturday afternoon until loud noises were heard from Blocks G and H flags of Moremi hall of residence, OAU. At around 11:55 am, there was a gas explosion on the 1st floor of block H. According to findings, the timely intervention of the porters curbed the spread of the fire. It was supposed to be a beautiful Sunday morning, but not until the Moremi inhabitants were awoken from their sleep.
