Great Ife Students' Union Clarifies Misinformation Surrounding Rape Incident
By Omotara Adesina
In response to the viral rape report released by the Osun State Police, the Great Ife Student Union has clarified the victim's relationship to the university. This clarification follows a thorough investigation conducted by the Central Executive Council to ascertain the victim's identity.
The initial report, issued by State Command Spokesperson Yemisi Opalola, identified the victim as a student of Obafemi Awolowo University. However, the student union refuted this claim, stating, "We discovered that recent reports circulating about a rape incident mistakenly identifying the victim as a student of our institution. We wish to clarify that the individual involved is, in fact, a student of Foreign Links, not our student."
The victim, whose name has been withheld, was reportedly raped and robbed by a commercial motorcyclist, Damilare, on Friday, July 6, 2024.
The release emphasized that the incident took place off-campus after the victim had boarded the motorcycle outside university premises. As such, the Students' Union is urging media outlets to verify their information to prevent the spread of false news, highlighting the serious consequences of misinformation.
"We strongly caution against the dissemination of false information and emphasize that any future occurrences will not be taken lightly," the Students' Union stated in its report.
