Transport Fare Hike Puts OAU Students' Academic Pursuits at Risk
This is Ayodele Kehinde Abisola, a student of Mass Communication, exploring the dilemma of students residing off campus and their plight as a result of the hike in transport fares to campus.
Over the past month, students at Obafemi Awolowo University have been grappling with the repercussions of a recent hike in transport fares, particularly those who reside off-campus. The increased costs have ushered in a wave of frustration, stress, and fatigue among the student body, significantly impacting their academic engagement.
Moromoke, a first-year student in the Sociology and Anthropology department, epitomizes the struggles faced by many. Hindered by the inflated transportation expenses, Moromoke's attendance has dwindled, attending classes only twice a week due to financial constraints. Once a diligent student, she now finds herself lagging behind, unable to participate in impromptu tests and jeopardizing her academic performance.
For students like Christianah, a third-year Yoruba department student, the solution has been to seek part-time employment to offset the increased transportation costs. However, this endeavor has proven fruitless, as the demands of work erode her ability to maintain consistent study habits, undermining the very purpose of her employment.
The plight of these students underscores the urgent need for action from relevant authorities. Addressing the exorbitant transport fares is crucial not only for the academic success of individual students but also for fostering an environment conducive to effective learning and dedication to scholarly pursuits.
It is hoped that by shedding light on these challenges, the necessary steps will be taken to alleviate the burden on students and ensure unfettered access to education, allowing them to pursue their academic aspirations without hindrance.
