Maintenance Residents Struggle with Electricity Supply Amidst Tariff Increase

Some residents in Maintenance have voiced their frustrations over the recent surge in electricity tariffs, which have resulted in uncomfortable living conditions and financial burdens. The increased electricity rates have led to a reduction in power supply to these hostels, forcing residents to adhere to strict timetables for electricity usage. Additionally, the rise in tariffs has also triggered a hike in house rents across some of these hostels.

Residents under Band A, which includes certain tertiary institutions, are particularly affected by the increase in electricity tariffs. Previously enjoying a campus-like power supply, these residents now find themselves grappling with limited electricity availability. Vice Chairman of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), Musliu Oseni, revealed during a press briefing in Abuja that customers under Band A will now have to pay ₦225 per kilowatt-hour, a significant jump from the previous rate of ₦66.

Ada, a resident in one of the affected hostels, lamented the noticeable decrease in power supply since the tariff hike. She highlighted instances where electricity is switched off during specific hours, affecting water access and forcing students to fetch water manually. Hostels such as Aquifer, Degold, SHG, Aderonke Sijuade, and Rock of Ages are among those facing these challenges.

Goodness, residing in another hostel, shared her landlord's decision to ration electricity between 7:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m., prompting additional payments from tenants. The rent was also increased under the guise of covering electricity tariffs and maintenance costs, further straining residents' finances.

In Rock of Ages hostel, Joy described ongoing mismanagement issues exacerbating the electricity problem. With delayed purchase of electricity tokens and inadequate supply, the hostel's management struggles to meet residents' needs. Despite promises to install meters in every room and improve the situation, the management's actions have fallen short, resulting in continued power outages during crucial hours.

The complaints from Maintenance hostel residents shed light on the adverse effects of the escalated electricity tariffs on their daily lives and financial stability. As they navigate these challenges, residents call for better communication and sustainable solutions to address the pressing electricity supply issues.
