There have been series of reactions as the National Association of Nigerian Students under the leadership of Comrade Lucky Emonefe has set to organize NANS solidarity walk in appreciation of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on the student loan scheme.
The solidarity walk is set to take place on April 15th and 16th in FCT, Abuja. This announcement is coming after the 2024 newly revised Student Loan Bill into law thus repealing the earlier 2023 Student Loan legislation with immediate effect.
NANS Joint Campus Council Osun state Axis expressed its total displeasure and disappointment in the decision taken by the national body. NANS JCC Osun Axis in a press release on Sunday, April 7 explained that they advocated against student loans, citing the negative impact on students and the economy, and call for grants and scholarships instead. They criticize NANS National for not opposing IMF and World Bank policies, aligning with the government's anti-people stance, and endorsing President Tinubu's agenda despite its detrimental effects on education accessibility and economic hardships for students. As such, NANS JCC has clearly stated that it completely disassociates itself from the solidarity walk.
Favour, a student of English department said, "If this is a body that represents the interest of Nigerian students, it clearly has been infested with either those who are not students or who do not understand what the student loan scheme means". She went further to state that, "NANS is not supporting Nigerian students but the scheme in disguise. And who does this scheme pay? Nobody! If we could pay up, Nigerian students are smart enough to do something more worthwhile.
The students loan scheme is for whose benefit? That should be asked as well because this is not supporting any student!"
Another student said, "This country should be on Netflix".
There are some changes that are being made to the 2024 loan act. These includes the establishment of the Nigeria Education Loan Fund (NELFUND). NELFUND to provide loans to qualified Nigerians for tuition, fees, charges, and upkeep.
There is also the removal of family income barrier. Before the enactment of the 2024 Student Loan Act, the family income of an applicant was a determining factor for loan approval. The applicant’s family income must not exceed N500,000 per annum. Under the revised law, however, this requirement has been removed, and family income will no longer be a prerequisite for eligibility for the student loan.
Other things are the removal of guarantor barrier, Skill-development Programs as part of the loan, removal of parents’ loan history as a prerequisite, beneficiaries to begin repayment 2 years after NYSC, punishment for filing false statement to NELFUND, and debt forgiveness.
In all, there appears to be some level of discontent with the step taken by NANS to organize a solidarity walk as majority state that it is unnecessary.
