The Division of Student Affairs at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) has issued a statement regarding the recent security breaches in Moremi Hall. The management has been informed, and efforts are underway to understand the causes and implement preventative measures.

The Division urges students to maintain their usual vigilance and reassures them to continue their daily routines without fear.

In a conversation with the Moremi Hall Chairperson via WhatsApp, an OAU correspondent asked some vital questions.

At what point in time did the hall warden and porters become aware of this recent act that has occurred quite a number of times?
"For every incident, they become aware only when we raise an alarm. This is usually between 2 a.m. and 5 a.m."

What has always been their response to it?
"To be honest, they’ve been on top of it. In response to previous incidences, the porters had heightened their vigilance, the Division of Student Affairs was also making efforts towards increased security measures, and the CSO of the school had even queried some of the vigilante men over their negligence."

What do you think is really causing these occurrences because it is quite strange?
"You really can never know what’s the motivating factor in the mind of an evil doer. However, I think certain environmental factors have contributed to it such as our very low fencing, especially around archive, lack of illumination in 4 blocks out of 8. 4 of our blocks are renovated and fully lit, and there have been no recorded incidents in those blocks; however, the other four have repeatedly recorded security breaches. Negligence on the part of the students by leaving their doors unlocked and unsupervised at odd hours."

Finally, what do you think should be done to stall future occurrences?
"My security recommendations are lighting up blocks E to H, lighting up the perimeter of the hall, installation of barbwire around our fences. Empowering and equipping the vigilante men attached to the hall."

In all, the school management has stated it has zero tolerance for any form of criminal act, and the culprits will be apprehended and brought to book.
