HOW TO FIND A GOOD ACCOMMODATION OFF CAMPUS AS AN OAU STUDENT.

Embarking on the journey of higher education is an exciting and transformative experience for students, especially as a student of the famous, Obafemi Awolowo University. One of the crucial aspects of this adventure is finding suitable accommodation that aligns with both your academic and personal needs. This guide aims to provide practical tips and insights on how to find the ideal accommodation as a student in Nigeria.

Start Early:

The search for suitable accommodation should begin well in advance of your academic year. The demand for student housing is high, and starting early will give you a better chance of finding affordable and convenient options. The pressure is not as high during the session but after.

Consider Your Budget:

Establish a realistic budget for accommodation, taking into account not only the rent but also additional costs such as utilities and transportation. This will help you narrow down your options and avoid financial strain.

Most importantly, do not allow any agent to impress on you an apartment that is bad

Location Matters:

Consider the location of your potential accommodation in relation to your campus, public transportation, and essential services. A convenient location can save you time and money, making your student life more manageable. For instance, if it takes you 30minutes plus to get to class, imagine having a class by 7am, this means you'll have to leave your hostel as early as 6:15am or 6:30am, which isn't always safe for you as a fresh student just trying to navigate the area.

Research Online Platforms and visit the physical locations:

Utilize online platforms like whatsapp pictures and videos but do not rely on them at all.

Physically visit the properties you're interested in. This allows you to assess the condition of the accommodation, check the amenities, and get a feel for the surrounding environment. There was incident of an 100 level who relied on only pictures and paid for an accommodation before arriving at the location. She met shambles and was left stranded because the place was very bad. So take caution when you see a very beautiful hostel online. If you can't check it yourself, send someone around there to help you check it.

Ask for Recommendations:

Seek advice from seniors, classmates, or local residents about the best areas for student accommodation. Word of mouth can be a valuable resource in identifying safe and student-friendly neighborhoods.

Ensure that the accommodation meets your needs in terms of amenities such as, security, and proximity to grocery stores and other essential services.

Understand Terms and conditions:

Carefully review and understand the terms of the agreement. Be aware of the duration of the lease, any additional costs, and the conditions for renewing or terminating the lease.

Safety First:

Prioritize your safety when selecting accommodation. Research crime rates in the area, check the security measures in place at the property, and consider the availability of emergency services.

In conclusion, beware of extortion of some real estate agents who unnecessarily charge more to gullible students. There are several instances of rent extortion, where occupants pay directly to the agents with more than 30% additions.
