As a student in Nigeria, life can be tough, especially when it comes to affording homemade meals. With the poor state of the economy and the increasing cost of living, it can be challenging to satisfy your cravings for tasty, home-cooked food. However, there are still some low-budget soups you can make right in your hostel without breaking the bank.
1. Okro Soup
One such soup is Okro soup, also known as Ila Alasepo in Yoruba. It is not only easy to cook, but it is also one of the cheapest soups you can find in Nigeria. All you need is a little palm oil, iru, pepper mix, crayfish, smoked fish (panla), and your preferred seasoning. It would cost at least 1000 naira and may be eaten with any swallow of your choice.
2. Egusi Soup
Another budget-friendly soup is Egusi soup. This soup requires Egusi and vegetable (ugwu) as the major ingredients. Egusi costs between N300 and N400 for a cup. You can add pepper, ponmo/meat, palm oil, and seasoning to taste. The versatility of Egusi soup allows it to be consumed with a variety of foods, including rice, spag, eba, fufu, and semo.
3. Banga Soup
Lastly, Banga soup is another affordable soup you can make with palm nuts. This is a popular soup in the Eastern part of Nigeria. The banga oil is one of the key components in this soup. It is quite simple to make and only needs a few ingredients, including pepper, crayfish or catfish, meat, and stock fish. Foods like fufu, eba, pounded yam, rice, boiled plantains, etc. are served with banga soup.
In conclusion, these low-budget soups are not only tasty but also easy to make, and they won't cost you an arm and a leg. With just a few ingredients, you can whip up a delicious meal right in your hostel without worrying about your budget.
