Manchester City Football Club has condemned the act of criminal damage caused to Liverpool’s team bus after the two Premier League teams clashed at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday. The Greater Manchester Police has confirmed that they have opened an investigation into the incident. Although no injuries were reported, the Liverpool bus was found to have sustained damage on its return journey back to Merseyside.

In a statement, Manchester City FC said that an object was thrown towards the coach in a residential area, which they strongly condemn. The club went further to express its disappointment towards the home fans who made inappropriate chants during the game, including references to the Hillsborough disaster of 1989, which resulted in the loss of 97 Liverpool fans. City stated that such incidents were unacceptable and that they would work with supporters and officials from both clubs to put an end to hateful chanting.

It is not the first time that tensions have escalated between the two football clubs. In 2018, Manchester City’s team bus was damaged by thrown bottles as it approached Anfield for a Champions League match against Liverpool. Similarly, in December of the same year, a 15-year-old girl suffered a head injury after a plastic cup filled with coins was thrown from the Liverpool support into the City end during a League Cup tie at the Etihad.
