The Academic Staff Union of Universities, Obafemi Awolowo University met on Tuesday 11th of January, 2022 over the update on EAA disbursement.
In a statement released dated 11th of January, 2022 and signed by the chairman of the union Adeola Egbedokun Ph.D, the Congress, after exhaustive deliberation, resolved that the branch should embark on total, indefinite and comprehensive strike and the branch executives should commence the process of obtaining permission from the national secretariat to embark on total, indefinite and comprehensive strike.
This strike is coming when the University is trying to balance the interrupted academic calendar by COVID-19 which has led to the merging of two UTME sets with batch A just resuming and batch B awaiting admission.
However, in Obafemi Awolowo University, there are two bodies of Academic staff, the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and the Congress of Universities Academics (CONUA). There are no accurate statistics of lecturers that are under these bodies but due to previous strikes by the ASUU body, the CONUA has always been running the academics activities of the University neglecting the industrial strike of their counterpart, ASUU.
The lecturers in the faculty of Arts especially in the department of English are mostly ASUU members. This means that the department of English will be greatly affected. The lecturers in the Faculty of Technology too are ASUU members. For Faculty of Science, the lecturers in Physical Sciences are mostly ASUU while their counterparts in the Biological Sciences are CONUA members.
This means the University will not be closed down as CONUA lecturers would be ready to go to classes, the academic calendar may not likely change though course outlines may not be completed, or if changed might just be addition of few weeks as course registration is yet to commence.
Most of the students offering courses being taught by ASUU members will have to resolve to self-learning if the strike persists as the academic calendar is most likely not to change anytime the union finally calls off the strike.
