THE SENATE MEETING AND IT'S EFFECT ON OAU EXAMS AND HER STUDENTS.
The senate of the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile Ife, held an emergency meeting to investigate the protest embarked upon by students of the university.
The students of Obafemi Awolowo University had staged a protest on October 1st,following the death of Adeshina Aishat Omowumi, a 24 year old final year student in the Department of Foreign Language. They blamed the school health centre for negligence which resulted in the death of Aishat.
During the protest, they barricaded major roads. This prompted the university management to suspend student activities and direct all students to vacate the halls of residence. It also put the swearing-in of the newly elected Students' Union officers on hold
However, a statement was released on the 5th of October by the Registrar of the university, dictating the senate mandated the University Management to set up an independent committee to look into the immediate and remote causes of the students' protest with a view to preventing any future occurrence. The committee is to submit the report within two weeks.
EFFECT OF SCHOOL CLOSURE ON STUDENT'S.
The students of OAU commenced their 2019/2020 Rain semester examination on the 20th of September before the school was shut down. The resulting disruption will aggravate a negative impact as students won't be motivated to read and study. Students in their final years have been in the same level for 3 years which is quite exhausting.
Increased Possibility of exposure to COVID-19 virus: Instead of being in an enclosed community or vicinity, they are allowed now to spread out to different parts of Nigeria and the world at large. This increases the possibility of exposure to COVID-19.
We've had cases of schools that had shut down due to pandemic crisis. OAU management is jeopardising the life of her students.
Issue of finance and school: Economic shocks place pressure on students to work and generate income for financially distressed families.
Students in this kind of situation will rather work than study for exams.
Altering OAU calendar: The closure of the school has brought a pause in the school acitivies.
Considering the pandemic that happened last year, which put the whole world in dilemma and affected the educational system. Going into another closure will ensure the present calendar is stretched and encroaches on the next session.
However, some students and other relevant bodies have condemned the position of the university’s senate by putting an abrupt end to ongoing examinations which they describe as an insensitive act.
