TAMMY ABRAHAM AND FIKAYO TOMORI: ENGLAND OR NIGERIA?

ADETOLA SAMUEL

This is an issue that has generated a lot of controversies since the beginning of the new season. Both players' performances throughout the week have caught a lot of affections and have been a bone of contention concerning the eligibility of both players to play for England, Nigeria and Canada. The rise of Tammy Abraham and Fikayo Tomori to limelight in a jiffy has got many football fans startled. Considering the fact that they played in the second cadre of English league football.

While the former played for Aston villa and was pivotal for them in promoting to the elite football league (the lucrative English Premier League) by scoring 26 goals in all competitions for the team from villa park, the latter featured for Derby County where he played a key part for the team. Guess what,Fikayo Tomori was voted as the best player in 2018/2019 season for the Rams.He was instrumental for them in their quest to get promoted to the first division.Though, the team did not achieve their dreams, however, the performance of Fikayo cannot be overemphasized.

Coincidentally, the two players' club is Chelsea and ever since the season got underway, the two players have played a key role for Chelsea consolidating on their blister form last season thanks to a young manager who also derives joy in helping youngsters to showcase their talent, Frank Lampard,Tammy has scored 8 goals in 10 games in all competition,Fikayo has been a mainstay in Chelsea . Also, we shouldn't  forget that Abraham scored in the last champions league game in the 22nd minute on his 22nd birthday.

In the past few days, there has been a tug of war amongst pundit and fans akin to the nationality both players should switch allegiance to especially with the fact that both players have just been called up to the England national team. Some are of the opinion that choosing England ahead of Nigeria could just be the beginning of the end for the duo.Testament to the fact that players like John Fashanu,Gabriel Agbonlahor,Jordon Ibe,Carton Cole, etc, had all done this in the past but are now biting their fingers for making the wrong choice because these aforementioned players only played little or no game for the English team before they were dumped.

Abraham 22, before now had represented the under aged teams of England 18s,20s and in fact took part in two friendlies in 2017 against Brazil and Germany.
Tomori 21,has only represented the Canada youth team while also being available for selection for the Canadians but now opted for England.

Others on the flip side have argued that playing for a big side like Chelsea gives them higher premium than the earlier players mentioned. Also, the English national team is prominent compared with the Nigerian team and this will raise the stakes, transfer value, laurels, etc and if they continue in that rich vein of form, there will be no one stopping them.
These players are young adults and are mature enough to make decisions on their own, they have made their decisions and they should be respected.
WILL THIS HONEY MOON LAST OR IT IS HERE TO STAY? We can only sit back and watch as events unfold because time will tell.
