FORMER VICE CHANCELLOR OF OAU TAKES LECTURE IN ANTI-SUICIDE CAMPAIGN

In the anti-suicide campaign held at Oduduwa hall, Obafemi Awolowo University, the key speaker for the campaign, the former Vice Chancellor of OAU and the founder of the foundation for the Care and Resettlement of the Mentally Ill, CAREMI, Professor Roger Makanjuola took a lecture titled ‘Deliberate self harm and suicide'.
In his lecture, he defined suicide as a successful attempt to kill oneself. He gave the statistics of suicide in the world stating that each year, 800,000 individuals die world wide from suicide. He urged the audience to therefore pay rapt attention to the lecture as this would go a long way in the fight against suicide around the world.
In the course of his lecture, he also talked extensively about deliberate self harm, saying that it is synonymous to attempted suicide which he defined as an action or actions with the apparent objective of ending one's life. He said to take any action of self harm seriously because deliberate self harm can also lead to death.
Furthermore, he stated some reasons for attempting suicide. Some of which were; mental disorders especially depression, physical illness especially chronic or terminal illnesses, academic stress and failure among others. He also gave some methods of prevention like developing a counselling service in the University, improving conditions under which students live, amidst others.
In conclusion, he rounded off giving solutions to suicide and offered condolences to the families of all those who committed suicide on OAU campus.
