The Untold Truth About CHM 102 On OAU Campus

A 2016 premiumTimes investigative work done by Selected OAU campus Journalists

The Department of Chemistry in Obafemi Awolowo University has recorded over the years mass failure in the course "Introductory Chemistry II (CHM 102)" offered by students from the faculties of Pharmacy, Science, Technology, Education, Agriculture and College of Health Sciences. Nonetheless, some reasons have been attributed to be the cause of this occurrence and Premium Times has taken it upon herself to bring to limelight the mystery behind the matter.

Bello Smart, a 200-level student of the department of Industrial Chemistry while speaking with one of our correspondents opined that the major reason for the failure can be traced to the voluminosity of the course content and suggested that it would have been better if the content be split.

Another 200-level student from the same department who pleaded anonymity because of her rapport with lecturers stated that the course is bulky and students find it convenient to read materials and go for tutorials rather than attend classes.

In an interview with Dr Olaoluwa Ogunkunle, an inorgano-industrial chemist who happens to be one of the lecturers teaching the course stated some cogent factors, viewing the problem from three perspectives -the students, lecturers and the management.

According to him, "CHM 102 is a voluminous course which requires much preparation. Also, some of those students are not qualified to be in the university because they want to be spoon-fed".

Another CHM 102 result

"1,999 students failed the course last session and we had to upgrade it, we were left with 1,230, we saved 769 of them. In the real sense, students who had between 40 and 45 failed the course", he added.

Dr. Ogunkunle stated that the tutorials the students go for affect them, likewise they rely solely on notes from previous sessions which will not help them. He further explained that most students repeating the course now had once carried over the course and still fail to attend classes forgetting that questions will be set by lecturers and not the tutorial teachers.

The inorgano-industrial chemist also commented, On the part of the lecturers, they try their best in teaching the students but some factors affect their teaching such as the venues, unavailability of Public Address System and the large number of students.
He blamed the university management for allocating lecture venues that are not conducive and cannot accommodate the immense number of students offering the course, leaving most students to sit on the floor while some are left with no choice than to stand.

Nifemi, a part 5 student of Engineering Physics, asserted that he also failed the course three consecutive times, reason being that students were misinformed on the question format. They expected multiple choice questions but getting to the examination halls, they became dumbfounded seeing essay-like ones. He also claimed that the lecturers exhibited nonchalant attitude when marking scripts. More so, he emphasized that he went to question his result and on seeing his script a page was not marked and the only thing the lecturer did was to upgrade the result from 35 to 37.

A rare occurrence

However, it's a different ball game for a 300-level student from the same department who had 70A in the course. She made it known that the course is actually voluminous but failures recorded have been as a result of the unserious attitude of the students towards the studying of the course content prior to the examination.
