ADVENTIST STUDENTS' FELLOWSHIP, OAU TO HOLD AWARENESS PROGRAMME ON DEPRESSION AND SUCIDE

Adventist Students' Fellowship held a press conference yesterday, 28th of June,2019 as a result of the upcoming awareness programme on the prevalent social issues of depression and suicide. The press conference started around 4:15pm and was anchored by the ACJOAU General Secretary, Kehinde Babajide.
The President of the fellowship started by stating the purpose of the awareness programme which was designed to encourage students more on the need to push forward and have mental awareness in which experts were provided to speak with students like Guidance Counsellors, Medical Doctors Psychologists and Spiritual Counsellors.
The General Secretary of the fellowship added that "the programme is meant to train and enlighten people on how to talk to people, challenge them to push further,to listen to people and getting tips on how to be watchful and helpful."
The Staff Adviser also buttressed that the programme intends to give hope to the hopeless and to provide platform for people to regain confidence.He added that there'll be room for follow-up which was the reason for the involvement of the Guidance Counsellors.
He said, " Apart from collaborating with Guidance Counsellors,We ourselves will setup a committee that the students can relate with.Having a platform where people can easily pour out their mind which will be helpful as the most common use form of suicide is the use of Chemicals such as sniper.
Society created the problem. The school did not equip the students enough for tough times. Life is all about facing challenges and overcoming them. The society needs to solve it and we are to solve it. The programme is not about religion but our social responsibility."
The President of the fellowship ended by stating the expectations of the programme which is to encourage people build relationships amongst themselves as the programme came up as a quick response to the alarming rate of sucide and cannot be guaranteed to be an annual event.
The programme is scheduled to hold on -
Friday, 5th July,2019 by 5:30pm- 7pm
Saturday, 6th July, 2019 by 8:30am-1:30pm with the theme Escaping the Scourge of Depression and Suicide: Let's talk.
The guest speakers include Dr Oluwatosin S.O (Department of Guidance and Counselling OAU), Mr Adewole Makinde (Student Support Center), Professor Aransiola (Dean of Students Affairs OAU), Pastor Sylvester and lot more.
