OAU: Struggle to study

By: Ogunjobi Bright

It is no longer a news that students of OAU faces the difficulty of spaces at different  lecture theatres during lectures and it is  dishearten to say the cases  of  spaces at lecture theatres are getting worse every session.
Students lament everyday over unfavourable  venues for their numbers. Imagine over 600 students  having lecture at a venue that have 400 seats. Reference to CHM 101, LIT101, EGL305 @ AUD2, MTH101  and many more.
According to Statistics over 8000 students were matriculated this session and over 3000 students are offering  CHM 101 yet the venue allocated for this course was 1000 seaters lecture theatre, a place which has than less than 1000 seats due to the fact that some of the seats have spoilt.
It is not only part one students that faces this  scenario on OAU campus but majority of the students in the university.
Another case of  study is the lecture theatres given to part three students of English. A class known to be more than 500 yet a lecture theatre  which is not big enough to accommodate 400 students was given.
Speaking with a political science student offering POL 301 and POL 307,who pleaded to remain anonymous as a result of fear, said the lecture theatre given for the courses, which is SSLT 1 and SSLT 2 both venues in social sciences were too small.
In his statement he said, "Ordinarily the  lecture theatres ought to contain about 200 students respectively but  to our greatest surprise, about 500-600 students are offering the course rendering some people opting for the ground while some had to stay outside and recently a Professor in the department (name withheld) gave an impromptu test in which he refused to collect the scripts of those that wrote it outside, the lecture theatre but eventually did after much plead."
However the management of Obafemi Awolowo University  is  not helping the matter as it admits more than what it infrastructures can take.
The last time OAU lecture theatres seats was renovated was during acting Vice chancellor, Professor Elujoba's era and the repaired seats has spoilt due to pressure of overcrowded  classes.
       When will this stop?
