Alumni Hall Experiences Water Scarcity; Hall Management Reacts
By Eniola Adeyeye
Water is a fundamental necessity for daily life, as maintaining good hygiene, health, and well-being depends on its availability. However, residents of the Alumni Hall of Residence have recently been experiencing significant water scarcity, which has caused inconveniences and affected their well-being.
According to information gathered from anonymous sources amongst the occupants, it has been hard to maintain daily activities due to the insufficiency of the water supply.
The following names are formed as the sources want to remain anonymous.
A resident, Bola, expressed the difficulty of coping with insufficient water. She explained, "Because of this insufficiency, some of us packed our clothes home, and we that we are not staying near have to pack our clothes from Alumni to PG hall to wash at a friend's place." She also expressed how the availability of water is dependent on the hostel's porters. She stated, "It is not every time that we don't always have water, but the porters only open it for us whenever they wish."
Another resident, Adetomiwa, noted the challenges of losing personal items during the struggle for water. "Last week, I dropped my bucket at the tap, and up until now, both water and bucket, I see none. And whenever Dam water is available, we can only use it for bathing because of the cleanliness," she explained.
Amina shared that the porters blamed the scarcity on the dry season and described how it affected her daily domestic activities. She stated, "Every time the porters say it is because of the dry season and hopes it gets better by the time this season is over. This affects me in many ways: the way I wash, the way I clean, my plates, and even cooking as well. I have to reduce the way I cook."
Favour also shared similar sentiments about its effect on their hygiene: "Some people do not even bathe to church and sometimes to class. Most times, we go to Moremi Hall to fetch water. When we eventually have the water, the porters only open it whenever they wish."
Hostel Management React
In response to these complaints, Mr. Makinde John, the Alumni Hall of Residence Supervisor, shared his perspective. According to him, there should still be no complaints about the scarcity, as there has been an improvement in water supply, with two stable boreholes consistently providing water.
However, he defended the decision to allow the porters open the taps for the students whenever they feel it is appropriate. He stated that there cannot be a specific time for opening the taps because students have different class schedules. So, to ensure fairness, the porters open the taps when they deem it appropriate.
He also cited infrastructural challenges, such as the burst pipe around the Department of Architecture, as contributing to the scarcity. He urged the residents to be patient until the end of the dry season as there are limitations to how they can pump water during this season. This is to ensure that the engine pumping the water does not get burnt or damaged due to overheating.
