Amidst Convocation, OAU Students Decry Hike in Transport Fare

Students of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) have expressed outrage over a significant fare hike imposed by bike riders during the ongoing convocation ceremony.

The students, who rely on public transportation to commute between the campus and the town, have reported a drastic increase in fares. What was once a reasonable ₦150 fare from the town to the campus gate has surged to ₦300, while the fare from the town to the campus itself has skyrocketed from ₦250 to ₦500.

Many students have decried the unfairness of this price hike, arguing that it takes advantage of the increased demand during the convocation period. They have called on the university authorities and relevant regulatory bodies to intervene and address this issue.

“It’s unfair to take advantage of us like this,” said a disgruntled student. “We’re already struggling with the rising cost of living, and this additional burden is just too much.”

Another student, Temitope who spoke to an ACJOAU correspondent, said he was charged a transport fare of ₦1000 from Campus Gate to White House by bike.

The students have resorted to taking further action, including protests and boycotts of lectures if the situation is not rectified promptly. They have urged the university authorities to engage with transportation providers and negotiate a more reasonable fare structure.

As the convocation continues, the students’ concerns over the exorbitant fare hike remain a pressing issue. Meanwhile, earlier in the day, it was observed that there was little turnout of buses to convey the students to campus.
