Inside OAU: The Unwholesome State of Lecture Theatres
By Mercy Awa
The University of Obafemi Awolowo, renowned for its beautiful architecture and aesthetic appeal, faces several challenges. Some lecture theatres are in a state of disrepair and struggle to accommodate students comfortably during lectures. Among these is the well-known Oduduwa Lecture Theatre 1 and 2, commonly referred to as ODLT 1 and 2.
ODLT is located below the Amphitheatre and serves as a popular venue for lectures, exams, and study sessions, both day and night. However, it is not without its issues. Many of the seats are broken, forcing students to use wooden planks as makeshift seating on the metal frames.
Worst of all, students must contend with the unbearable stench of bird droppings, which can be found on the tables, chairs, floors, and even the windows.
Another lecture theatre in urgent need of renovation is the Education Trust Fund (ETF) Lecture Theatre. The wooden chairs are detached from their iron frames, and some lack seats entirely. The condition of these lecture theatres is alarming, prompting students to urge the university management to prioritise their reconstruction.
The issue extends beyond these two lecture theatres; the popular 1000-Seater Lecture Theatre also requires significant renovation. This venue should comfortably accommodate a large number of students for lectures, yet it currently falls short. Many seats are dislodged from their frames, and the fabric is severely worn.
Additionally, from the beautiful Faculty of Administration, we can see the lecture theatre known as Admin Extension. This theatre requires repairs, as the seats appear worn and some have been removed. While it is clear that these seats were made from quality materials, they have served their time and now need replacement. Many seats are disconnected from their frames, and their coverings are frayed.
Not far from the Faculty of Administration Extension Building is the ICAN Lecture Theatre. The condition of this lecture room calls for urgent attention from university management, as most of the wooden seats and tables are broken and detached from their frames.
It is also disheartening to observe the prestigious Department of Music, renowned for producing excellent sounds; however, the state of its structure and classrooms does not reflect this reputation.
The Social Sciences Lecture Theatre remains in good condition, although some of its tables are damaged.
The Department of Philosophy is located on the top floor of the building, which is used not only by Philosophy students but also by those studying Foreign Languages, Religious Studies, and other departments.
The poor condition of these lecture theatres negatively impacts students' learning experiences. Some theatres are unable to accommodate all students, resulting in some having to stand during certain classes due to a lack of seating. These factors hinder the smooth learning process that students should be able to enjoy.
