Dilapidation Dilemma: The Plight of Akintola Hall Residents Amidst Ongoing Maintenance Issues
By Joy Oludele
Residents of Akintola Hall are facing numerous challenges due to the hall's dilapidated state. This has led to continual complaints from residents about the poor living conditions in the hall. According to Joy, a resident, "According to the hostel rules, we’re not supposed to cook in our rooms, but in the kitchen net. However, how can we obey this rule when the dirty water from our neighbours' disposal is splashing directly into the kitchen net due to a leaking wall?"
Akintola Hall has been plagued by various issues, including weak electricity, leaking roofs, poor security, and inadequate monitoring, all stemming from a lack of renovations over the years. The hall stands out as one of the most neglected, with problems such as leaking ceilings in some blocks and dirty water pouring into the kitchen net in others.
Serah, an occupant of one of the affected rooms, expressed her disappointment, saying, "It is bad and very poor. I expect the school to have fixed this with the amount we’re paying. The building is archaic, and I told the executives, who claimed they were working on it."

Peace, another resident, shared her concerns about the leaking roof, saying, "The day I noticed was when a heavy rain fell, and it felt like the heavens opened and water was rushing in. I had to put out buckets and devise a technique to clean up. The cleaning was really stressful, and it was not funny. It is not normal for someone to stay under a leaking roof, especially when we’re paying maintenance fees. I am not sure what the money is being used for." She added, "Imagine if it were a faculty roof that was leaking; a lot of documents would be lost. They should treat our rooms like a faculty."
Faidah, another occupant, explained that the situation is equally concerning, with dirty water pouring into the kitchen net due to a malfunctioning drainage pipe. Instead of flowing through the pipe, the water escapes and pours out through the wall barricade separating the upper and lower rooms. This has raised concerns among residents, who fear that the block might collapse due to the frequent water damage, which can weaken the wall. Faidah complained about the disturbance, saying, "It is disturbing us, and we cannot sleep in peace. When we need the rain, we cannot pray for it to fall because it will disturb us." She also revealed that, "one executive, along with a portal and supervisor, came to investigate and promised to return. We await their return."
Temidayo also expressed her fears. She said, "Sincerely, I am scared—like really scared. The issue has worsened; the wall is leaking, and everywhere smells because of the water. I hope a chunk of the wall doesn’t fall on my head one day as it did in the corridor during one heavy rain."
Hall Executive React
In a conversation with one of the hall executives, she stated that it is not only Akintola Hall that is experiencing leaking roofs; other hostels are experiencing the same issue, too. She added that appropriate parties have been contacted, and swift action will be taken.
