Great Ife Students' Union Opposes Electricity Rationing In Halls of Residence
By Deborah Adeyemi
The Great Ife Students' Union, in a press release on the 5th of December, 2024, opposed the electricity rationing in the halls of residence. The Students' Union, created as a catalyst for the voice of students on campus, is aware of the aftermath of this rationing on students' lives and academics and objects to this act vehemently.
The Icons Organisation reported on Sunday, December 1, that the management has started rationing electricity on campus.
The Students' Union, in the release, condemned this act as a rash, inhumane, and impromptu decision by the management to ration electricity. They stated that initially there was a hike in hostel fees imposed on students this session, which was significantly increased on the verge of providing good basic amenities in the hostels, particularly the provision of uninterrupted power supply. However, with the current situation, the reverse is the case. The Students' Union described this as "nothing short of betrayal."
In a release made by some Awo hall residents on Tuesday, December 3, the residents expressed significant concern over the university's decision to ration electricity in their halls of residence. While they acknowledge the resource management challenges faced by the university, they believe that rationing will negatively impact their academic performance and social interactions, ultimately hindering their ability to study and participate in extracurricular activities.
On the issue of electricity rationing, the Great Ife Students' Union stated its demands to the school management, expecting feedback on them. The union demands the immediate return of uninterrupted electricity to all halls of residence. Secondly, they have submitted a petition for a detailed explanation of this unjustifiable situation and the steps being taken to prevent a recurrence of this issue. The third demand is for an improvement in service delivery across all halls of residence.
